      Sewing Solidarity

Sewing Solidarity is a collaborative project with GAP Arts  a young people focused creative project in Balsall Heath, South Birmingham. Working over several sessions, a diverse group of young people engaged in discussions about their relationship to local community. Drawing on the traditions of union banner making, we co-designed a series of small hangings and a larger banner. Inspired by both the film The Old Oak and a research visit to the People's History Museum  to study the many union and political banners in the collection, we used hand painting techniques and typography to develop our own banners.

The banners are exhibited permanently at GAP Arts and the larger banner is available for local organisations and groups to borrow for community events. The phrase "Strength in our Community" was written by a young participant of the Sewing Solidarity project.
