jane thakoordin  participatory artist and visual artist

I am a participatory artist, meaning collaboration is at the heart of everything I create. My work is never a solitary activity — it’s shaped by the voices, hands, and imaginations of others. Inspired by the bright, bold, and beautiful, my practice is deeply rooted in my Guyanese heritage, where colour and texture are celebrated as powerful tools of expression and connection.

I work with textiles, found objects, and upcycled materials—often gifted by those who know my love for the eclectic and the vibrant. These elements carry stories, histories, and personal meaning, which I weave into collective creations that reflect shared experiences.

My process is driven by curiosity and co-creation. From research and planning to making, problem-solving, and evaluation, I work in close partnership with the groups and organisations I collaborate with. Together, we shape the journey as much as the outcome.

I champion creative risk-taking, experimentation, and open dialogue. Group feedback and  responsive action are central to my approach—what Social Work calls “reflection-in-action.” This dynamic method ensures that everyone is actively involved, shaping the direction and spirit of the project. I find this approach especially powerful when the work culminates in a public exhibition, tangible product, or cohesive body of work.
